OLYMPIC defeat galant Souths
Monday 19th July
In round 19 of the Veto Brisbane Premier League, Olympic played against South's United at Runcorn.
Olympic needed to secure all three points against a relegation threatened South's United at Runcorn yesterday. "To make the finals, said Bellas, we need to finish in the top six on the competition ladder, but what we're really looking for is a top two finish. This will secure a double chance, if we happen to lose our first semi final game".
"South's won't be easy. They gave it to us in the first round - they have a talented young side that will run all day. The only thing they're really lacking is a few experienced players to calm the youngsters down when things aren't going their way. We are fighting, as they are, for every available point. We need to come second and they need every point to avoid the relegation dogfight. It will be a close game. Steve Glockner will have them firing against us so we need to be on our game for the entire 90 minutes."
The game started brighly for Olympic with our team controlling large majority of the possession and South's counter attacking when they got the ball off Olympic. It didn't take long for Olympic to score their first goal. Michael Butters got Olympic's first in the 14th minute after pouncing on a sloppy South's pass. Scoring has become a habit for Michael because he has gotten a goal in his last four starts.
South's replied against the run of play in the 18th minute when a Ben Evans free kick wasn't dealt with properly by Olympic's defence. Poor communication allowed South's to re enter the game. Olympic however did not allow this setback to haunt them but they continued to pile on the pressure controlling a major share of the possession. This eventually paid dividends when Frank pounced to score Olympic's second goal in the 22nd minute following some great passing movement from his fellow team mates. within 24 minutes Olympic comfortably lead 3 - 1 when Butters again scored a great weaving goal to extend Olympic control of the game.
"We played some terrific football in the first half, we were quite comfortable and the guys were playing free flowing football. Gradually building an attack and probing for weaknesses in their opponents defensive line. I felt that we deserved our half time lead", said Bellas.
South's began the second half strongly and this paid dividends just two minutes into the second half when they scored from another set play to really ignite the tie. At 3-2 it was anyones game and the football went from end to end. In their desire to gain an equaliser, South's were being exposed at the back and their saviour was their goal keeper who made a number of telling saves to stop Olympic getting another 3 or 4 goals from the game.
The final score was Olympic 3 defeating South's 2. The win puts Olympic into second spot on goal difference after Redlands did Olympic a favour drawing with Capalaba in the bayside local derby.
Bellas after the game remarked that "although the result indicates a very close fought match I was happy with the committment shown by our players in the second half. Even though we conceded a goal early in the second half, we continued to press for a further goal and didn't just sit back and defend our lead. It shows we have character and that's very important to our club and supporters".
In the other game, Olympic's reserve grade side lost four nil to South's in a pretty dour encounter at 4pm. The loss still has the reserves in the top six and vying for a finals spot.
Next week Olympic plays host to Pine Rivers at Goodwin Park on Sunday 25th of July. The main game kicks off at 4pm. Reserves kickoff at 1.45pm whilst our Youth 1 side plays against Albany Creek at 11.45am.
