Olympic held in Cairns

Olympic FC defender Shane Stefanutto said his side need to be more clinical after being held to a 2-2 draw by Cairns FC at Barlow Park on Saturday night.

Alex Smith and Steve Whyte were on target for Olympic while Chris O’Hare and Joseph Zupo struck for the hosts in a score line that mirrored that of the sides Round 7 clash at Goodwin Park.

Smith opened the scoring in the 30th minute when he picked up the ball on the edge of the centre circle before gliding past several defenders and calmly finishing into the bottom corner from the top of the box.

Cairns levelled the scores midway through the second half when O’Hare who broke free of the Olympic defence and chipped a bouncing ball over Nicholas Mooney.

Olympic reinstated their lead just six minutes later when Whyte played a one-two with Smith on the top of the box before finishing into the bottom corner.

But the home side hit back almost immediately when Zupo headed home a Jamie Carroll free kick in the 73rd minute to seal a share of spoils.

Carroll was shown a red card after the full time whistle for his part in a heated post-match exchange with Kieran Sanders.

Saturday’s draw sees Olympic slip behind Lions & Moreton Bay at the top of the NPL Queensland standings.

Speaking post-match, Olympic defender Shane Stefanutto said his side who had 29 shots in Saturday’s match needed to be more clinical at both ends of the park.

“We’re disappointed, we have a winning mentality, we’re a big club in this league and we want to stay up the top so as players we’ve let the club down and we’ve let the boss down.”

“We weren’t desperate enough in both boxes tonight and that’s two weeks in a row now where we’re giving points away which is really disappointing.”

Stefanutto said despite Saturday’s draw his side remain focused as they push for success in both the league and FFA Cup.

“We’re not looking too far ahead, we’ve got Young Roar next week, we just need to refocus, we’ve still got plenty of big games to play.”

“We’ve got our Round of 32 FFA Cup clash which is going to be important for our club and us as players so we’re looking forward to that but we won’t lose focus on the league which is minimum making finals and trying to lift a trophy.”

Olympic are back at home next Sunday with a clash against 8th placed Brisbane Roar Youth.
