Olympic FC midfielder Steve Whyte said he was delighted to score his first goal for his new club in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Brisbane City at CTM Stadium.
Goals from Zelfy Nazary, Kieran Sanders and Whyte secured all three points for the visitors as Olympic maintained their spot at the top of the NPL Queensland league table.
Nazary opened the scoring in the 27th minute when he latched onto a delightful Sanders through ball and finished past Jake Clancy taking his tally for the season to three.
Olympic’s lead was doubled ten minutes later when Costa Psaros found Jez Lofthouse free on the left who beat his man before picking out Sanders at the back post who made no mistake with the finish.
Whyte added a third late on as Clancy failed to deal his shot from distance for his first goal in Olympic colours.
City pulled one back in stoppage time through Nathan Bird who marked his 100th NPL appearance for the club with a long-range effort of his own.
Speaking post-match, Whyte said he was pleased with the composed nature of his sides performance.
“It was good win in the derby, I thought we had control of most of the game and we did a good job closing down their midfield and not letting them play out.”
“We caught them in transition and punished them, I think we could’ve scored more goals but overall I’m happy with the performance.”
Whyte’s goal in the closing stages of Saturday’s match was his first in Olympic colours; Whyte said he was delighted to open his account for his new club.
“It was good to get that first goal, I’m used to being a bit deeper and looking for a pass but in the end I had a shot and was lucky enough that it had enough power to go in under the keeper.”
Olympic’s focus now turns to next Sunday’s home clash against fourth placed Brisbane Strikers.
