SWQ Thunder – 2 (Keanu TUART 45’, Oredi KIBOMBO 81’)
A nine-man Olympic side grabbed their first win of the season edging out SWQ Thunder 3-2 at Goodwin Park on Sunday.
Olympic took the lead through Keegan Sullivan late in the first half but were pegged back within minutes as Keanu Tuart levelled for the visitors on the stroke of half time.
Early in the second stanza Callan Pashen scored his second of the season before Eriq Burovski got in on the act to see the hosts race to a 3-1 lead.
From that point on Olympic were forced to dig in their heels and show their defensive resilience as Christopher Wilson was sent off for receiving his second yellow card of the contest before goalkeeper George Baveas went down with a dislocated finger.
With all three substitutions having been made centre back Will Lalic was forced to pull on the gloves but despite Thunder pulling one back through Oredi Kibombo nine-man Olympic held firm to take all three points.
18’s assistant coach Fernando Cruz praised the resilience shown by his side after going down a man.
“The boys dug very deep and showed great character to get the win and with that, as coaches we were very proud.”
The win lifts Olympic to seventh on the league table ahead of the weekend’s trip eighth placed Gold Coast United.
