Sunday night saw a bumper crowd pile into Goodwin Park to witness a top four clash between Olympic FC and top of the table, Gold Coast City FC in round 20 of the PlayStation Australia National Premier League Queensland.

It was an open, end to end display of attacking football throughout the 90 minutes, with both defences scrambling to stop numerous attacking raids on goal. However, it was to be Gold Coast City who would walk away with the three points after two late goals saw them defeat Olympic FC 3-1.

It would take 27 minutes for Gold Coast to open the scoring through Sam Smith after Nicholas Mooney’s initial save fell straight into the path of the oncoming forward who was able to slot home the first goal of the match.

Sustained pressure and possession would see Olympic hit back late in the first half when Sam Cronin’s thunderous volley found the back of the net after Danny Byrne’s initial shot was saved by Gold Coast City’s keeper, Matthew Stein. The ball fell straight into Cronin’s path who held his nerve to strike a clinical volley from outside the box into the back of the net.

The second half would see Olympic control possession and territory, launching numerous raids on the Gold Coast City goal. However, it would be Gold Coast City to be the next to score through anther clinical finish from Sam Smith in the 75th minute.

Gold Coast would then survive a late onslaught from Olympic, before going on to put the game to bed in the 88th minute through Nikola Mirkovic.

The defeat sees Kirkham and his side fall nine points behind the leaders Gold Coast City who edge closer to being announced champions for the 2017 season. Sitting in third place, Olympic remain four points ahead of fourth placed Western Pride, with a victory on Saturday night all but securing third position.

Olympic’s next task is against 8th placed Northern Fury in Ayr on Saturday Night.

Olympic would like to thank all their support for making the trip to Goodwin Park on Sunday Night and for creating a hostile atmosphere.
