Olympic FC News
Welcome to the first Olympic FC News. With this line of communication, we want to promote our events and our community. If you have anything you would like shared on Olympic FC News, please email details to firstname.lastname@example.org.
The 2017 Annual General Meeting was held last week, and saw the introduction of a host of new faces on the committee. We will have further details for you on who these committee members are in future editions, and encourage all members to seek a committee member to talk with about any club issues.
Our congratulations go to Danny Byrne on being the first Olympic FC player to achieve 100 games in the PS4 National Premier League. Danny celebrated the occasion in the same way that he celebrated his first game in the NPL, bagging a double in both games. There will be feature story in next week’s Olympic FC News.
Olympian of the Week
Spiro Armenis is a familiar face at our great club, but few people may recognize just how much this life member has done for Olympic FC. While running a number of successful ice cream parlours in shopping centres throughout South East Queensland, Spiro joined the Olympic FC committee in 1980. He took on the role of club president in the mid-1980s, and has had a passion for Olympic FC ever since. Spiro now runs the Olympic Taverna canteen and functions hall with his wife Joan, and they will be celebrating 50 years of marriage next year! Joan and Spiro have one son, who studies sound engineering, and a daughter, who works for a major clothing label. Next time you’re at Goodwin Park, make sure you pop in to say hello to Spiro, and taste some of the best food this side of the Aegean Sea!
National Team Selection
Congratulations go to Kaitlyn Torpey, who played her formative years with Olympic FC before joining representative affiliate Central Brisbane FC, after being selected in the Young Matilda’s (Australian Women’s U20s team) to play against the USA and Canada in the coming weeks. We are all proud of her achievements to date, and confident that there are many more international representatives to come from our ranks.
You may have noticed that Goodwin Park has been a hive of activity during the school holidays. We have been lucky enough to host three football clinics, including one with our dear friends from Japan, Ventforet Kofu, one with Michael Theo Soccer Academy and one with the Central Brisbane Preparation Academy, the result of a partnership between Brisbane Roar FC and Olympic FC. It’s been a pleasure to see so many of our Olympic juniors at all three of these clinics, and we are sure that you’ve learned as much as you’ve had fun.
Olympic Goes Pink
On Sunday 16 July, Goodwin Park will play host to an exciting and worthwhile initiative as all of our girls’ teams turn pink to raise money and awareness for breast cancer research. There will be raffles on the day, with a gold coin donation being requested to watch the grand final rematch from last year in the WNPL as our Olympic FC Ladies take on The Gap FC. Donations can be made on person at the game, or online at this link.
We are also currently in discussions with Football Queensland to extend this event to allow our boys teams to show their support for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Olympic FC Personal Development Series: Q & A with BRFC W-League
Spend an evening with the Brisbane Roar W-League coach, Mel Andreatta, and a panel of players from the Roar. This is a great opportunity for young players to hear from some of their sporting idols about their journey to the top, and what they do to be their best. The player panel includes two former Olympic FC players, Kaitlyn Torpey and Allira Toby. Book your place here.
Venue: Olympic Taverna Functions Centre (Goodwin Park)
Time: Monday 10 July, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm
A Game With Food and Flavour
Saturday 15 July will see a celebration of multicultural Brisbane as Olympic FC take on Brisbane City/ New Italian Generation in an Old Boys clash to celebrate the role of the Greek and Italian communities in Brisbane. The day will feature junior matches, plenty of Italian and Greek delicacies, and of course the Senior NPL match of the weekend. Join us at CTM Stadium for a day of friends, food and football.
The school holidays are coming to a close, so training will resume as normal for all teams next week. We hope you enjoy your weekend, and look forward to welcoming everyone back next week. For our NPL teams this week, best of luck in all of your games.
Make sure you check the Olympic FC Facebook page and Fox Sports Pulse for the latest match updates.
