Sunday night football returned to Goodwin Park this weekend as an in-from Olympic FC played host to winless Sunshine Coast FC at Goodwin Park.
Olympic displayed a dominant performance on the night, comfortably outplaying the Sunshine Coast side on their way to an 8-0 victory on a special night.
While the 8-0 result will be remembered from the night, it was captain Dany Byrne’s night as he achieved his 100th PlayStation Australia National Premier League match. Byrne’s double on the night sees him achieve the record of 53 goals in 100 National Premier League fixtures, an outstanding achievement given the quality of the competition in recent years.
Fitting for the occasion, it was Byrne who opened the scoring in the 15th minute, hitting a looping volley over the keeper into the back of the net. Byrne remained a threat all night, picking up two assists and another goal in the 42nd minute.
Prolific striker, Ramone Close also starred on the night, bagging a ten minute hat-trick after picking up his first in the 30th minute and third in the 40th minute.
Costa Psaros also featured heavily in the fixture, splitting Fire’s defensive line consistently and threatening the goals on numerous occasions. Psaros scored his first for the evening in the 25th minute of play and had a double in the 62nd minute when he was cleverly found unmarked in the penalty area.
Brayden Cook was a late substitute in the second half, before he too joined the scoresheet, netting his first senior goal for Olympic. The late strike from Cook sealed the 8-0 victory, ensuring Olympic close the gap on first placed Gold Coast City FC to 3 points after their narrow defeat to Brisbane Strikers.
Olympic FC’s next assignment will be at home to fourth-placed FNQ Heat on Sunday afternoon at Goodwin Park.
